Kicking off the year with “Healthy Resolutions," the theme for January, Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center canvassed residents and staff, asking them to list some of their own New Year's resolutions. Answers covered a wide range of future ambitions, including:

  • Making sure we get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily
  • Getting up out of our chair and stretching
  • Watching our meal portions and cutting out sugary drinks

“We are providing programs that present these topics in a fun and engaging way, to be effective in raising the health consciousness of residents and staff,” said Edward Hughes, administrator of Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. “By involving everyone in this educational effort, we will be sure to capture their imagination and drive the lessons home more successfully than a single lecture.”

Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center has already captured the spirit of the initiative, observing the year-opening Healthy Resolutions theme by celebrating National Spaghetti Day on Jan. 4 - providing lunch for residents and staff, and having “noodles of fun” events throughout the day. The facility also celebrated Jan. 19's National Popcorn Day, providing popcorn to a variety of community partners while Gentiva Hospice supplied popcorn for the residents and staff of Chalet. To wrap up the month, Chalet also celebrated National Soup & Salad Day along with Farmer's Market Day.

The skilled nursing facility is already holding a new set of creative programs for February's theme, Heart Health Month. This month's initiatives are focusing on educating residents and staff about activities and diets that will help protect cardiovascular health.

Future months will address themes ranging from stress management to stroke prevention to making good memories.

Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center Observes "National Wear Red Day" to Promote Heart Disease Awareness

Skilled Nursing Facility Staff Begins a Month of Cardiovascular Health Awareness By Donning Red for Heart Health on Feb. 3

February 7, 2023

The staff at Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, the 88-bed subacute and skilled nursing facility, showed their support in the fight against heart disease by donning red attire on National Wear Red Day, observed on Friday, February 3. The initiative is part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign to spread heart health awareness.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and largely preventable. To help reduce this toll, February is also American Heart Month , a time for the entire community to focus on improving cardiovascular health.

Chalet's observations of both National Wear Red Day and Heart Month are focused on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The facility's Administrator, Edward Hughes, said to help raise awareness, the staff has turned the facility red with lights and décor around the facility. "We have passed out red squeeze balls to support de-stressing, which can relieve strain on your heart," he said. "Our dietitian has made sure everyone gets a heart-healthy meal at each serving. We also have started a group that will walk during breaks to get some daily stretching in."

Effects of Heart Disease on Women

Heart disease affects women differently than men, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Factors that can raise women's risk of coronary heart disease more than that of men include:

  • Diabetes
  • Low levels of HDL cholesterol
  • Mild to moderate high blood pressure
  • Smoking

Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center Held Coat Drive for Women & Children in Need

Skilled Nursing Facility Solicited New and Gently Used Kids' and Adults' Coats for Local Organizations

Dec 19, 2022

Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, the skilled nursing facility in Indianapolis, Ind., held its first annual kids and adults coat drive throughout November and December. It collected new and gently used coats, which the facility then distributed to a local organization serving people in need.

The organization receiving the coats, Wheeler Mission Center for Women & Children, provided them to youngsters and adults in their networks who were in need of jackets, snowsuits, and other cold-weather clothing. The skilled nursing center also donated socks, gloves and scarfs.

"Holding this coat drive is very much in keeping with our commitment to be a good community neighbor," said Edward Hughes, Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center administrator. "We know that by distributing these coats to local women and children in need, our community partners play an active role in helping local children, women, and their families."

Anyone with spare children's coats, in sizes ranging from infant to young adult, are always welcome to drop them off at Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, 4851 Tincher Drive, in Indianapolis. Please call 317-856-4851 with any questions.

"This is another way we fulfill our mission," said Hughes. "Our commitment is to provide genuine hometown care while becoming a vital partner in the community."

Chalet Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center hosts a variety of yearly events to benefit the community. Past events have included Easter egg hunts and visits from the Easter Bunny, Halloween trunk or treats, and drive-through holiday lights and decorations.
